A week or so ago I was in the Port Macquarie hood. This not-so-sleepy coastal hang is around five hours drive north of Sydney and reputedly has the best climate in Australia.
Not only that but it boasts beach and riverside scenery, hinterland, good (if expensive) restaurants, a swish new theatre complex and a pretty impressive cycling, walking and kayaking/stand-up paddleboarding scene.
I don’t know if it is my imagination, but I’m pretty sure I saw fewer fat people in Port (as the locals call it) than in Sydney.
Every morning a brigade of people do Port Macquarie’s coastal walk. If you do the whole lot you would end up at Lighthouse Beach, Port’s showcase beach, but most people do the historic Doctor’s Walk and the esplanade by the river. At around 5km that’s enough. And at the end there’s plenty of cafes to recharge with coffee and sourdough. Take a look!
