When we were in Mudgee for the Anzac Day long weekend, we went to Lowes Winery, on the recommendation of some rival cellar doors. I’d never been to Lowes before, but the minute I arrived, I wondered what I’d been doing all my life.
Lowes is quite simply, fabulous. When we arrived, the cellar doorstress gave us a colour map and we went on a wander around the grounds, past the mulberry trees, the cork trees, the “chook palace”, the vineyards, nut orchard and the fig and feijoa plantings. If we had more time we could have gone up to the orange trees, bees, donkeys, picnic grounds and lookout, but we were anxious to get back to the wine.
You can winetaste at the cellar door in the traditional manner, or take a “flight” of wines outdoors, accompanied by a local produce platter and of course that fabulous outlook.
In 2013 Gourmet Traveller Magazine awarded Lowes “Best Small Cellar Door” – take a look, or better still, go to Mudgee and visit yourself. http://www.lowewine.com.au
