Champion cyclist Wayne Hildrid and wife Susan run Bright Velo Café & Bike Hotel. He was looking for a place to start a retro cycling café with a French feel and settled on Bright, in the heart of the Victorian High Country. Smart move. Bright is arguably Australia’s most cycle-friendly town. Not only is it on the family-friendly Victorian Rail Trail but it is a hill-climbers haven, surrounded by the Victorian Alps. Bright Velo is located in the quieter end of Bright’s main drag, with a large sunny courtyard and fireside lounge for the cooler months. Nice touches abound. Cycle jerseys hang from the ceiling, there are coffee table tomes on the great cycling mountain passes and the staff are a font of knowledge on local trails. Food runs the gamut of hot breakfasts to light lunches. They bake their own strudels and there’s always something homemade bubbling away – soup and risottos are faves. Order a mug of chilli hot chocolate to spur you up those mountains.
