Calling all foodies: Milawa

If you are an Aussie foodie who hasn’t been to Milawa, then get out the bucket list and put it on the top. Then pack the car, because anytime from now onwards is an excellent time to visit Australia’s Very First Gourmet Region.

At 31km by car from Beechworth, Milawa’s cooler climate flatlands ringed by hinterland lends itself to in wine, mustard, olives, fruit, bread, cheese, walnuts, honey and berries (Australian berries, of course!). Also you can take a gander at local art.

Highlights are:

Brown Brothers Cellar Door & Epicurean Centre specialises in regional wines and lesser-known wine styles as well as an Epicurean Centre for fine dining or afternoon teas.

Milawa Cheese Company – established in 1988 and located in the historic Milawa Butter Factory, they make over 21 farmhouse cheeses using cows and goats milk to European methods.

Milawa Factory Bakery – handcrafted artisanal sourdough breads, using a twenty-year old culture named ‘George’!

Olive Shop & Provender – olive tastings and products, perfect for olive-a-holics like me.

There’s also Milawa Organic Beef by appointment, Blue Ox Berries (the name alone is fab) and Milawa Mustards

Most providores and their outlets are clustered around the cheese factory, which is a lovely place to while away a few hours over lunch, followed by a little condiment tasting.
