Romania’s last stand

This dot on the map is Sfântu Gheorghe. It’s Romania’s last stand before the Black Sea. To the east is Russia and to the right is Turkey and the architecture reflects that: homes with Ottoman Empire features, Orthodox church and, being Romania, communist era apartment blocks. It doesn’t much feel like Europe here with its muddy roads, Turkish style homes, a single rundown supermarket with men in camouflage sitting outside on the verandah smoking and stray but seemingly happy dogs lurking around. Take a look around.

Pretty port – the area is slowly getting a name for eco tourism

Local life

Orthodox Church is still operating although the congregation has dwindled

The supermarket is the local hub
They love wearing camo around here
